Advances in Thread Inspection Using Acfm
نویسندگان
چکیده
The A.C. Field Measurement technique (ACFM) has been used to detect and size surface-breaking defects for 15 years, both topside and underwater. The technique is well suited to inspecting painted, welded structures, but one of the first applications of the technique was on drillstring threaded connections. Originally based on a mains powered instrument, TSC have recently developed a much lighter thread inspection system based on the rugged, portable Amigo instrument. The new Automated Thread Inspection (ATI) system uses a probe with an array of sensors to inspect the 12 most highly loaded thread roots in one pass. Advanced software automatically detects crack signals in the data and reports length, depth and location information without any need for operator intervention. This paper reports on the capabilities and results obtained with the new system, including the use of a higher operating frequency to give much greater sensitivity on non-magnetic components.

Inspection of Internal Tank Welds using the ACFM Inspection Method
This paper describes the application of the ACFM technique for weld inspection and focuses on recent experience in both Europe and Central America in the use of the technique for the inspection of steel storage tanks. Inspection of the tank floor is usually conducted using magnetic flux leakage methods but it is recognised that this cannot be applied to the detection of cracking in the welds jo...
متن کاملA Combined Acfm-smfm System for Real-time Detection and Sizing of Surface Cracks in Metals
In some applications such as quality control of metal components or inspection of large metal structures, inspection systems with rapid scanning capability are required. Of particular interest are systems capable of real-time detection and sizing of surface breaking cracks in metals. Since such systems have to perform the data processing in the course of scanning, they should be based on NDE te...
متن کاملAcfm above a Hemispherical Pit in an Aluminum Block
Much of the recent research at the NDE Centre at UCL has revolved round the study of the scattering of thin skin electromagnetic fields by a fatigue crack. The early work concentrated on the perturbations to the surface electric field (ACPD), while the more recent work involved the scattered magnetic field (ACFM). The Centre has recently become involved in a collaborative project, a part of whi...
متن کاملThe First 20 years of the A.C. field Measurement Technique
The A.C. Field Measurement technique was originally developed as a non-contacting version of the A.C. Potential Drop technique, with the aim of accurately measuring the depth of surface-breaking fatigue cracks at welds underwater. Since then, the technique has expanded into many diverse applications, both underwater and in air. This paper describes the evolution of ACFM equipment from the first...
